                                  at the University of Calgary

The Institute for Quantum Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary group of researchers from the areas of Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. The goals of Calgary's Institute for Quantum Science and Technology are to conduct leading research in key theoretical and experimental topics of quantum science and technology, to provide excellent education and training in quantum science and technology and cognate areas, and to foster linkage between the Institute and other quantum science and technology institutes and with industrial partners.

                                  Vision:

To be a world leader in research and education in pure and applied quantum science and technology.

                                  Mission Statement:

To advance quantum science and technology through interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach.

Congratulations to Prof. Gilad Gour, Dr. Carlo Maria Scandolo, and the former undergraduate students John Burniston and Michael Grabowecky on their article "Necessary and sufficient conditions on measurements of quantum channels" published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 476: 20240832.

Technical abstract: Quantum supermaps are a higher-order generalization of quantum maps, taking quantum maps to quantum maps. It is known that any completely positive, trace non-increasing (CPTNI) map can be performed as part of a quantum measurement. By providing an explicit counterexample we show that, instead, not every quantum supermap sending a quantum channel to a CPTNI map can be realized in a measurement on quantum channels. We find that the supermaps that can be implemented in this way are exactly those transforming quantum channels into CPTNI maps even when tensored with the identity supermap. We link this result to the fact that the principle of causality fails in the theory of quantum supermaps.

Congratulations! Prof. Paul Barclay won the 2024 CAP Herzberg Medal.
